Volcanoes, livestock and innovation: Join ENAJ in Central France this October

Auvergne is perhaps not the most obvious place to look for the future of European farming. The historical region in central France is mostly forested and mountainous, making it a popular destination for hikers and skiers. But the region is also home to some of France’s most forward-thinking farmers — and this October, ENAJ invites you to meet them.

This four-day Low Budget Press Trip to Clermont-Ferrand takes in the full breadth of what Central France has to offer: long-term crop trials designed to withstand a changing climate, specialist seed selection, volcano wines and mountain pastures.

We’ll spend a full day at the Sommet de l’Élevage — the 35th edition of one of Europe’s great livestock fairs, drawing 125,000 visitors, 1,800 exhibitors and 2,000 animals under one roof. With 150 conferences and live demonstrations of the latest agricultural technology, it’s a goldmine of stories for any agricultural journalist.

The timing is no coincidence. As the United Nations marks 2026 as the International Year of Pastoralism, this trip puts that theme front and centre — from international stands at the fair representing Mongolia, Colombia, Spain and beyond, to a visit to a real mountain pasture where ewes graze the Chaîne des Puys just as they have for centuries.

On the evening of Tuesday 6 October, ENAJ holds its 2026 Annual General Meeting at the fair. This is a key moment for the network — guild delegates, don’t miss it. Register here.
